DESTINATION AUSTRALIA - NO THANKS!

Australia will become as infamous as Canada in the very near future, once the international organisations find out about Canberra (the bush capital)'s anti-kangaroo killing rituals. For Australia to be shooting its iconic kangaroo, on our coat of arms, to be served up to mainly dogs, and shot by bloodthirsty hunters backed by shoddy science is reason to be thoroughly ashamed.

It's time to call for an enquiry of all those involved in the decision to kill these beautiful animals, including their scientists' questionable recommendations and the RSPCA. Habitat loss, lack of wildlife corridors, car strike, domestic and feral dogs, illegal hunters and farmers have more than taken the place of dingoes, former arch enemy of kangaroos.

It's also time humans realised what incredible ecosystem services kangaroos provide and show them some respect. Kangaroos are earth's gardeners and they do all this without threatening a single species, as they have done for the last 16 million years. It's we humans that are the threat to other species - not kangaroos!

WILDLIFE CARER REPORTS

  1. 1)I was on a call centre for an organisation and we had a call for a mother kangaroo that had been hit on the highway and do you think anyone cared ..the caller was distressed because as she was on the phone to me she saw at least three cars continue to hit the animal. I had also called this incident into the police as it was a traffic issue also and  it took 5 hours for them to get to the area due to lack of staffing or perhaps that wasn't a priority ..Until I phoned them back to say that someone had crashed their car because the poor thing had tried to get itself up. So that was about 5 hours of needless pain the animal went through when the police arrived they had no option but to shoot it. Unfortunately they didn't check the pouch and there was a baby. I was able to get a carer out later that day who rescued the joey but it later died due to being in shock.

GREAT BARRIER REEF IN DIRE STRAITS
U.N.E.S.C.O. is in Australia to determine if the Great Barrier Reef should be stripped of its World Heritage status due to liquefied natural gas port, coal seam gas and permission for the Gladstone Port Authority to dredge 46 million cubic metres inside the reef’s world heritage area for the next 20 years.
http://www.smh.com.au/environment/conservation/great-barrier-reef-is-at-a-crossroads-says-un-mission-20120307-1uit8.html#ixzz1osGlQohx

Much the same thing is happening in Tweed Shire, Northern NSW, where there are not one but THREE World Heritage areas and where there is more biodiversity than at Kakadu yet the highest rate of threatened species in NSW. Where a massive housing development is driving coastal koalas to localised extinction. Where 75% of the shire is covered with coal seam gas exploration licences. Where in 2009 the World Rally Championship was allowed to run cars screaming at 200kph through National Parks (where you cannot take a horse or even camp) and State Forests where up to 45 threatened species were trying to breed in peace! Legislation was pushed through overturning no less than 12 environmental laws, all at the request of a Paris-based organisation. Are Australian governments corrupt, in cahoots with corporations? You decide ....

DEFORESTATION AND SPECIES LOSS
Australia has lost 75% of its old growth forests due to logging, mining, livestock farming, development in just 233 years of colonisation. From 1998 to 2005 a total of 104 million native animals (mammals, birds, reptiles) died from land clearing in Australia. In Tasmania, old growth forests are being felled to make woodchips to send off to Japan. The use of toxic and cruel 1080 is driving Tasmanian Devil to extinction with painful facial tumours. The same 1080 is handed free of charge to farmers anywhere in Australia, even delivered to their door, in an effort to control wild dogs. Is there no better way without risking other species and destroying groundwater?

DAMAGE LICENCES ISSUED TO LANDHOLDERS FOR ‘CULLING’ NATIVE ANIMALS
If a landholder feels there has been fence or crop damage he can apply for a permit to destroy native animals. Often officials grant the licence over the phone and don’t even go out to make sure there is real damage caused by the native animal (kangaroo, wallaby, wombat, emu, possums, galahs, gulls, corella, cape barren geese and seals) to the tune of 350,000 animals over the last 4 years. Data showed almost 5000 permits were issued to deal with eastern grey kangaroos between 2008 and 2011, with more than 1000 permits related to wombats and swamp wallabies. Each of those permits could be for up to hundreds of animals. No wonder Australia has the world’s worst record for mammal extinctions!

ROADKILL
Information provided by W.I.R.E.S. - Approx 7,000 native animals are killed on NSW roads DAILY!

SOUTH AUSTRALIAN KANGAROO POPULATIONS CRASHING
March 2009 - Three weeks ago, with a couple of activists from Animal Lib, I drove well over 1400 km around SA, from below the NT border to Woomera and beyond.
We found 8 empty kangaroo chiller boxes long unused. I spoke at length with a shooter who hadn’t shot for two years, he told me other shooters had given up completely. He said he went looking for kangaroos a few weeks ago and couldn’t find any tracks. In all that mileage we did, including early morning and late arvo, (I got some great sunrise photos) and at greenpick areas where recent rain had fallen, we only saw three live kangaroos, and about four roadkill. The shooters say the kangaroos have headed to the scrub because of the drought...but that's nonsense, these guys have scrub up to their back doors.
Kangaroos are on their way out, and I make no apologies for anything I say or do to prevent this from happening for as long as possible. The kangaroo mob structure has been smashed Australia wide, remnant pockets of genetically impoverished kangaroos are scattered around close to towns where there is some protection from shooters, and are incapable of moving to other small mobs to improve their diversity. Even then they are not safe as the NSW government has just opened up a huge new shooting zone around Mudgee, where kangas have never been shot commercially before.
Its very very grim for kangaroos, and fiddling around with contraception experiments is not the answer, or even part of an answer....the only answer I can think of is to stop the shooting, but that's not going to happen unfortunately.

CANBERRA, A.C.T. - KANGAROO KILLING CAPITAL
Every year Canberra conducts a ‘cull’ on kangaroos. In 2011, 75% of kangaroos in selected Canberran Nature Reserves were destroyed - approx. 3500 ( http://candobetter.net/node/2063 ). Why? There was plenty of grass so no excuses of killing them because they were too hungry or overgrazing were offered. Instead we were told that ‘there might be a drought next year therefore better to kill them this year in case their numbers escalate.’ In 2009 a total of 7000 kangaroos were massacred in Majura military base ( http://candobetter.net/node/1208 ) and in 2008 a total of 514 kangaroos were massacred at Belconnen Naval Training Station ( http://candobetter.net/node/1061 ) to cover up toxic contamination seeping into Lake Gininderra and surrounding new housing estates. Their bodies were buried in a pit.
